This book is a biography of John Leverett (1662-1724), first secular President of Harvard, who kept Harvard from becoming a Puritan Divinity School when that was what Cotton Mather and orthodox Puritans wanted. It was a very divided time in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Mather had seen his unquestioned support fade after the witch trials of 1692. The story gives an overview of his illustrious grandfather, Governor of the Colony, a father who had trouble making a living, and deaths in the family, one after another, as was usual in a time of smallpox and other diseases, hard winters, inadequate water, and various other problems. Leverett designed Massachusetts Hall, which survives today as Harvard's oldest building, and holds its President.tlevs presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816500012546859077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9093859852674145202.post-9085497338306374062023-08-21T05:03:00.001-07:002023-08-21T07:07:38.572-07:00September Tuesday

This is a story of a woman who wanted to be an elocutionist, on the cusp of the nation's Centennial (1876), when women were not permitted to speak on important topics of the day. A gifted reader and orator, with a beautiful voice, she went into reading war poetry to reunions and encampments of Civil War veterans. She also inherited an insurance business when her husband got sick and died, becoming one of Toledo (Ohio)'s first women business owners. It's the story of using one's voice when one can, and getting one's voice when one is able. Her life corresponed with the rise of elocutionists as a united group, and the rise of the woman's suffrage movement, which ultimately gave women their voice in the political arena also.tlevs presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816500012546859077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9093859852674145202.post-3799058861463242502021-11-13T06:43:00.002-08:002021-11-13T06:43:20.445-08:00Beginner's Guide to Quakerism

OK I admit this is for my family, as it's about my great great great grandfather. A legend was always told in our family about a 1600-mile stagecoach journey from Maine to Illinois, and I finally found enough information about it to put it in a book. That journey was in 1834, so this book starts at the beginning of the 1800's and moves right up through the Civil War. It is third in a series. I am finding it extremely interesting that truth, sometimes, is way cooler than fiction, and, it's true. Enjoy!tlevs presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816500012546859077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9093859852674145202.post-8573123463977101732021-03-04T20:04:00.004-08:002022-07-04T14:46:24.198-07:00Tall Corn State

There wasn't much crime among the Actualist poets or the vegetarian restaurant people of Iowa City in 1975, but there was crime in the town around it. This is a crime and coming-of-age novel about those communities at that time.

This volume combines all the haiku from e pluribus haiku 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, and the original, e pluribus haiku (2011). The 3487 refers to number of haiku, not kind, as they are all 5-7-5, given a somewhat unique style. This single volume will ultimately replace the others, as it contains everything that is in each of them, with an updated style.tlevs presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816500012546859077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9093859852674145202.post-59990900255413500122021-01-14T22:20:00.001-08:002021-01-14T22:20:20.749-08:00Epiphany Coup Haiku80 haiku from an unusual day

Lorenzo Reynolds was my great great grandfather. That's why, when I found this typed document among my genealogical papers, I felt some obligation to get it out to the public. But as I writer, I'm very impressed by his crisp style (while I have, myself, fallen into sloppy tortured sentences at times). He's clear, powerful, and strong, and he has a grudge against a certain character at Hillsdale College, in Michigan. He tells his story thoroughly and carefully.

He was the Treasurer right through the great fire, and through some very important times. His pioneering, and his family, are also of interest. Whereas he has gotten his story of the college out already, this is the first that I know where he has told his life story. Tells the story of an incredible family - actually several families - that lived through the times of hardship in Boston before the Revolutionary War. It was an uncertain time - some records may have been lost during the witch trials, and again during the revolution itself, but this book tells how the families intertwined and finally came to leave the city.tlevs presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816500012546859077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9093859852674145202.post-58132528993879262702020-05-02T14:28:00.001-07:002020-05-02T14:28:31.228-07:00All from before is now obsoleteAll from before is now obsolete
This was the original volume and represented the 100 haiku straight from the single week of April 2020. Not all had perfect kigo, that is, no traditional season clue as is expected in traditional haiku. The volume was accepted for Kindle but rejected by Amazon which (I suspect) was hesitant to print anything with Covid in the title. I rewrote the haiku to a higher standard (see above) and changed the title. This volume is still available. tlevs presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816500012546859077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9093859852674145202.post-54754775457379828982020-04-30T05:47:00.003-07:002022-07-04T14:51:36.583-07:00Hands Off That Pear

The Leveretts were one of the earliest families in Puritan Massachusetts. This book follows Thomas Leverett, elder and friend of John Cotton; his son Governor John Leverett, John's son Hudson, and Hudson's son John Leverett, President of Harvard. Parallels with the Cottons and Mathers are pointed out. Around the time of the witch trials, the exact lineage becomes murky, so the book points out possible reasons.tlevs presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816500012546859077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9093859852674145202.post-59983157764666543252018-10-07T14:19:00.001-07:002018-10-07T14:19:59.537-07:00Free Range Flash FictionNow available on audiobook (ACX) - narrated by Steve Bulls.
